| Samsung is seeing growth in AMOLEDs |
|
|
|
Samsung announced that the Ultra Touch S8300 (2.8") AMOLED is selling great. In fact they sold over 500,000 units within a month, and that's only in Europe.
Microsoft has announced the Zune HD, with a 3.3" touch AMOLED. Rumors say that Samsung are the panel supplier, and this device might prove to be a high seller too, with HD radio, video and a brilliant display. Finally, Sony's OLED walkman is shipping in the UK, and has already got a US price (399$ for 32GB, 299$ for 16GB), hopefully they will ship it during June or July (it is ready for pre-order now). Samsung are said to be the panel supplier to Sony (who have decided to only manufacture larger sized OLEDs).
Following this growth, Samsung are planning to quadruple their AMOLED production, and might introduce a new next-gen production line during 2009.
Right now Samsung are showing lot's of new panels, ranging from 5" to 31" at SID. Their 14.1" and 31" are "ready for production", but we do not have any release date for products yet. More about this next month... |

Philips were kind enough to send us a couple of OLED light panels samples - a blue rectangle and a white freeform. We published the first OLED lighting "review". Philips are the first company that offer such panels - they are available online. But these are samples only, the prices are high, and Philips are yet to actually ship them...
WAC lighting has also shown some OLED lamp prototypes. WAC is actually a design company, that are eager to use the new OLED lighting technology, and have created a couple of nice prototypes, worth a look.
Kodak are also working hard on white OLEDs. They have got a 1.7M$ US DOE contract to develop OLED lighting. The object of the proposed project is to construct OLED lighting panels (15cmx15cm) with efficacy of over 50 lm/W and lifetime of over 20,000 h, superior to most of the current commercially available luminaries.
Kodak were kind enough to send us a video of their panels, too... |
