- CES Aftermath: is LG taking the lead in OLED TVs?
SDC confirms a QHD 5" AMOLED |
Even though earlier rumors suggested Samsung will adopt an LCD for the upcoming GS5 phone, it was later reported that the GS5 will actually adopt a 5.2" WQHD (2560 x 1440, 560 PPI) AMOLED panel. At a display technology roadmap seminar, Samsung confirmed that indeed they are developing a QHD AMOLED panel.
Samsung will not stop at 560 PPI. The company is actually planning an even higher density panel - a UHD panel that will feature 860 PPI. It seems that Samsung will be adopting the Diamond Pixel architecture for those high resolution displays.
Is the OLED TV market finally here? |
Some of us have been waiting for OLED TVs for years now, and while the first products started shipping in early 2013, the market doesn't really exist as those TVs are still very expensive. Now there's some debate whether the OLED TV market will emerge in 2014 - or later (or not at all, of course).
On the one camp we have LG. The company expects the OLED TV market to pick up from 2014, "gradually becoming the main growth driver of the display business and replacing the LED TV market". LG thinks that 2014 will mark the beginning of a "rapid shift" to new UHD and OLED technologies. Specifically, LG estimates that global OLED TV sales will reach 30,000 to 50,000 in 2014.
iSuppli agrees with LG and they see the OLED TV market growing quickly - from 50,000 sets in 2014 to over 10 million in 2018. Other companies are gearing up to launch OLED TVs - including Hisense and even Panasonic (although I'm not sure if this report is credible).
But not everyone is convinced. In fact Samsung, the major OLED player, says that OLED manufacturing issues have been more significant than previously thought, and they now expect that it will take 3-4 years before cheap OLED TVs really arrive. But this may just be different ways of looking at the same market. It seems that all OLED players agree that the market will not really take off before 2016 or so.
Samsung to expand OLEDs to new applications |
Samsung reported their financial results for Q4 2013, and the company saw a lower than expected operation profit. Total OLED shipments were actually down during the quarter.
Samsung however is expecting the OLED market to grow, as they plan to start adopting OLEDs in more products - including mid-range smartphones, tablets and wearable devices. The company will also launch "upgraded" flexible OLED panels in 2014.
New startup offers affordable OLED lighting |
Alkilu, a new company established in 2013 to develop affordable consumer OLED lighting devices, unveiled their range of OLED products at CES 2014. And these indeed are affordable - some of those OLED lamps cost as low as $19.95.
The company's CEO, Alex Khayat, was kind enough to answer a few questions we had regarding the company and those OLED lighting devices. You can read the full interview here.
tesa's new OLED barrier adhesive tape |
Germany's tesa, one of the world's leading manufacturers of self-adhesive tapes, launched a new barrier adhesive tape for OLED encapsulation bonding, suitable for flexible panel production. These new tapes are transparent transfer barrier tapes that feature the company's DrySeal liner technology.
tesa says that those tapes provide a highly effective barrier (in x,y-direction) against oxygen and water-vapor, while still remaining flexible and highly transparent. The main applications of these new tapes are OLED encapsulation bonding and cover substrate mounting such as barrier films or glass. Read more here.
LG's global G Flex launch |
According to reports from Korea, LG sold over 13,000 G Flex smartphones in Korea. LG wants to become the flexible OLED smartphone leader, and is now launching their first such phone worldwide.
LG's phone is now shipping in the US, and in the UK as well. In February 2014 the company aims to bring the phone to more than 20 European countries.
Currently LG Display has a small flexible OLED capacity - about 6,000 4.5-Gen substrates each month. The company announced plans to double this capacity towards the end of 2014. According to reports from Taiwan, both LGD and SDC are increasing their orders for components used in flexible smartphones. IHS sees over 800,000 flexible OLED smartphones shipping in 2014 - and this will grow to over 8 million by 2018.
Organic photonics and electronics summer school |
The Polish Academy of Sciences is hosting an organic photonics and electronics summer school in Poland in the summer. This is the 15th Krutyn summer school that will this time focus on challenges in organic photonics and electronics from an Asian perspective (it is being co-organized by Kyushu University in Japan). The emphasis will be placed on revolutionary TADF emitters as OLED materials replacing expensive platinum group metallacycles.
This week long event (June 8 to June 14) is conceived as a high-level and highly intensive scientific event focusing on cutting-edge know how aspects of organic photonics & electronics with profound emphasis on the latest achievements in Asian Region. It will include training in the form of lectures and scientific consulting sessions designed for PhD students and young researchers seeking to reinforce their knowledge and skills in the field of organic photonics/electronics.
