2011 year in review...

2011 is now over - and it's been an exciting year for the OLED industry. Samsung enjoyed great success with their AMOLED displays, which are now featured in the best Android phones around (including the Galaxy S2, the Droid RAZR and Google's Galaxy Nexus). LG Display is focused on TVs, and will unveil the world's largest OLED TV next week at CES. OLED lighting is advancing - both in the R&D achievements and also on premium sample panels that are getting cheaper and more available. 2012 will surely be an exciting year, too.

Read more over at OLED-Info, where we detail more about the OLED market and industry in 2011, and also give our own forecasts for 2012. And here's our top-ten OLED stories in 2011, ranked by popularity:

LG 55-inch OLED TV

After months of rumors and statements, LG finally announced their upcoming 55" OLED TV. While the TV will be unveiled at CES 2012 in two weeks, LG already sent us some photos and details on this TV. There are some discrepancies between LG Display's information and LG Electronics information, but basically this is a Full-HD panel offering a great contrast ratio, fast response time and great colors. The TV is only 4-5mm thick and weighs just 7.5Kg.

LG's panel is based around Kodak's white-OLED with color-filter architecture, and it has 4 sub-pixels (RGB-W). This TV includes LGE's "Color Refiner" - a set of algorithms which improves and refine hues and tones. LG didn't provide any pricing information, nor when this will be released. The market reaction to LG's first real OLED TV will be very crucial for the OLED TV market in the next few years!

Panasonic back into OLEDs?

According to some reports, Panasonic decided to build a new 8.5-Gen OLED TV pilot production plant in Himeji, Japan. The company has already ordered some of the equipment. This will be a small pilot line (the investment will not be large, either) - as Panasonic only intends to do some R&D work there. Back in 2009 Panasonic collaborated with Sumitomo on OLED TVs, we do not know whether Sumitomo is involved with this project or not.

In an unrelated story, Panasonic decided to return to the global mobile phone market. The first phone that will be marketed worldwide will by an ultra-slim Android phone - and it will have a 4.3" qHD AMOLED display. It will be launched in Europe on March 2012, and later on in Asia and in the US.

Sony's OLED product start shipping

During December, Sony started to ship three new OLED products. The most exciting one is the Vita PSP - their portable gaming console with the 5" Samsung-made AMOLED display. Reports suggest that the first two days sales were great - and Sony shipped 321,400 units. But the following week sales were weak - Sony sold only 72,500 devices. There were some reports of stock shortages and some customers are waiting for bug fixes.

Sony also started shipping the HMZ-T1 OLED HMD in the US. The dual 1280x720 0.7" Sony-made OLED microdisplay packing unit costs $899. The final product is the FDA-EV1S, the OLED viewfinder accessory for Sony's NEX-5N mirrorless camera. This viewfinder has a Sony-made 1024x768 (XGA) OLED microdisplay, and it costs $349.

New OLED-Info sections

Two weeks ago we introduced three new sections on OLED-Info, allowing easy access to some of our resources. The first section is the new Videos index, a great way to find OLED related videos. The second section is the OLED product reviews, which lists OLED-Info's own OLED reviews. The final section is all about OLED interviews with OLED professionals. We hope all these new sections will prove useful!

While we're discussing OLED interviews and product reviews - we're always on the lookout for these. We love to get OLED products for a review here, and we're always keen to conduct interviews with OLED professionals and researchers.
