OLED-Info news

December was a busy month for us. On the 20th we moved OLED-Info to a new server. This will hopefully make the site faster and more stable. The new server is hosted and managed by LiquidWeb. Please contact us if you notice any weird issues or errors. A couple of days later we crossed the 4,000 newsletter subscribers mark.

OLED-Info was also nominated for the Golden Retrevo Awards. According to Retrevo, the awards honor the best and brightest independent bloggers of the gadget blogosphere... If you think OLED-Info is a good blog, please help us and click here to vote!.

2010 OLED year in review

2010 is now over... and it's been an interesting year for OLEDs. A lot of exciting OLED gadgets were introduced, including the Google Nexus-One and Nexus-S, Samsung's Jet, Wave and Galaxy-S, Nokia's N8, E7 and C7, three WP7 phones, and several HTC phones. Samsung couldn't keep up with the demand for AMOLED displays, and they have committed $2.2 billion for a new Gen-5.5 AMOLED plant, which will increase capacity ten fold. Samsung is not alone: LG, TPO, AUO, Visionox, Wintek also announced OLED production plans.

During 2010 Lumiotec started producing and shipping OLED samples, and several companies started to offer premium OLED lamps based on Philips, Blackbody and OSRAM panels. We saw a lot of OLED lighting prototypes, and several new companies announced plans to enter the market, including Pioneer (together with Mitsubishi), Panasonic, AUO, Kaneka, NeoView Kolon and Showa Denko.

OLED lighting news

December was a busy month for Philips' OLED unit. First they announced a new three-year project called EMO (Emerging Market OLED) - to research, develop and eventually produce OLED lighting panels targeting emerging markets in Brazil. Philips also transformed the Business Center OLED Lighting into a Global Business Unit OLED. They tell us that this emphasizes the importance of OLEDs within Philips. We posted an interview with Philips' Head of Business Creation in the OLED unit - in which we discuss Philips' OLED lighting products and plans. Philips also confirmed that the new Aston-Martin showroom uses 800 white OLED lumiblade panels in a beautiful installation by Jason Bruges Studio.

The last bit of OLED Lighting news comes from Shoa Denko - which announced plans to start producing OLED lighting panels - in 2015. These will feature 80lm/W and 40,000 hours lifetime.

The new Android v2.3 is designed for OLEDs

Google has released the new version of their Android OS (v2.3 Gingerbread). One of the thing they updated was the user interface (UI) - which seems to use more blacks. There are reports that this is so intentionally to take advantage of AMOLED displays (who consume no power on black pixels). This isn't a big surprise: AMOLEDs are used by a lot of Android phones, and Google chose a Super-AMOLED display for their own Nexus-S phone (although due to low supply it will ship with LCD in some markets).
