OLED Lighting news

The big story in November is OSRAM's ORBEOS - they are finally shipping their first OLED Lighting product!. The ORBEOS is round (88mm diameter), only 2.1mm thick with 25lm/W efficiency. The panels are available now through OSRAM's site.

Philips' Lumiblade panels have only 10lm/W efficiency. Philips claim that they have reached 80lm/W in the lab, but it will take 3 years to achieve 50lm/W at the production level, and 5 years to go beyond that.

More good news comes from LG - the company has decided to join the OLED Lighting race, through their LG Chem subsidiary. The plan is to start mass production as early as 2H 2010. They are already showing some OLED Lighting panel prototypes. Japan's Lumiotec actually plans to start mass-production in January 2010, and is displaying some new lighting panels.
Meanwhile, Konica Minolta has laid down their OLED Lighting plan:

  • Launch OLED lighting equipment by March 2011 (with a $38 million investment).
  • Build a large-scale OLED lighting plant by march 2014 (will require at least $110 million)
  • Get over 100 billion yen (about $1 billion) in sales by 2017/18

GE (who's cooperating with Konica Minolta, by the way) says that roll-to-roll OLED Lighting panel printing is 'real'. GE have achieved 90%-95% yield

Finally, if you're looking to get updated quickly on the latest happenings in OLED Lighting, then you'd be happy to know that Nanomarkets' have released their OLED Lighting webinar on CD. It presented the firm's latest forecasts and insights into how OLEDs are emerging in the backlighting and general illumination market. The CD costs 249$, but OLED-Info readers get a 50$ discount. simply use the following referral code when you buy it online: OLEDWEB.

What's happening with Sony?

There are some confusing rumors about Sony's Television business. On one hand, they are said to be released a new, large OLED TV at CES 2010 - the KDL ZX. It's not clear whether this will be 21", or 27", or maybe a 'series' of OLED TVs.

On the other hand, it is said that Sony has stopped their OLED production line. It is also rumored that Sony ar e working on new 'secret' TV technology - one that is not OLED and not LED-backed LCD. We'll have to wait and see on that one...

It's not all good news...

Besides the reports mentioned above about Sony, it also seems that CMEL is working at only 40% capacity. This is reportedly because of financial problems with their parent company (CMO). Hopefully these problems were solved later in the month when CMO merged with Innolux.

More bad news comes from Kyocera - the company has decided to stop its OLED program. Kyocera were working on OLED displays for mobile phones, and also researching flexible OLEDs.

The holidays season is coming

2009 will end soon with the holiday season... if you're looking for a gadget with an OLED display you have plenty of options to choose from - mobile phones, A/V players, digital cameras and other gadgets. Who said there's no progress?
