New OLED prototypes unveiled

October has been the month of OLED prototypes. AUO has displayed 14" OLED TV panels which are "ready for production". It's great to see AUO back in the OLED game. Another large panel is Samsung's new 30" OLED that's capable of 3D displays.

Both Samsung and LG have demoed new transparent displays. While Samsung's panel was small (2", 176x220), the LG panel is 15", which is probably the largest transparent OLED shown to date. LG says they have no plans to commercialize this displays yet.

Samsung are planning OLED laptops soon (in 2010), and have shown two new prototypes - a small 7" (1024x600) model, and a hybrid laptop-desktop computer with a 14" (1366x768) OLED panel. We can only hope that at least one of those will be available next year...

OLED Lighting news

OLED Lighting research keeps up its fast pace (well, in comparison to displays, in any case). The most interesting news comes from China - Visionox is showing new decorative OLED lighting products, which are actually available in small volumes. They say that they will address the general-lighting market in a few years, too.

OSRAM are showing new totally transparent OLED Lighting panels. The panels are large - 17x17 cm2, and only a few micrometers thick.

And finally, there's a new OLED Lighting company - Ledon OLED Lighting. This is a joint-venture between Zumbotel and the Fraunhofer institute. The new company will produce OLED panels and also develop and manufacture complete OLED lighting solutions and concepts.

OLED Production ramping up

There are good news from both LG and Samsung regarding their AMOLED production. Samsung have achieved 90% yield in their AMOLED plant, and are working 24 hours a day to meet demand. Samsung's plant is 4G, and currently making around 3 million panels a month.

LG, meanwhile, are planning a new 5G plant. Mass production of OLED panels will being in 2H 2011. It will have a capacity of 40,000 sheets Gen 5 sheets a month.
