Motorola announces a clamshell foldable OLED phone
Motorola announced the Razr 2019, a clamshell-style smartphone that features a 6.2" 2142x876 (21:9) foldable AMOLED display that folds inside. There's also a regular external 2.7" 600x800 AMOLED used when the phone is closed.
This seems, at least to me, to be a beautiful design which may appeal to more consumers compared to the larger foldable phones we have seen until today that open up to a tablet-style device. The Razr is also the cheapest foldable OLED phone yet announced at $1,500 (it will ship in January 2020).
BOE says that it supplies the foldable OLED to Motorola's new phone (according to our information, the secondary OLED is produced by AUO). BOE is also supplying foldable OLEDs to Huawei for its Mate X smartphone and Lenovo for the prototype 13.3" laptop it demonstrated.
JOLED starts sampling printed OLED panels at its 5.5-Gen Nomi site
JOLED announced that it has started sampling inkjet-printed OLED display panels in its 5.5-Gen production line in Nomi, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. Mass production is planned for 2020.
JOLED will market these medium-sized (10-32 inch) panels for use in applications such as high-end monitors, medical monitors and the automotive market. The Nomi site will have a monthly production of 20,000 substrates. Read more about JOLED, its products and its upcoming production line here.
Samsung and LGD to supply Apple with its iPhone OLEDs in 2020
Korean site ETNews says that Apple will release three new iPhone models in 2020 - all with OLED displays. There will be a 5.4", 6.1" and 6.7" models.
For the 5.4" and 6.7" models, Apple will rely exclusively on Samsung Display for its AMOLED displays - and will adopt Samsung's Y-OCTA technology (on-cell touch) which enables thinner panels. ETNews says that SDC offered great terms for Apple to secure the 2020 exclusivity. The 6.1" OLED models will use film-touch (as used in all OLED iPhones to date) and these OLEDs will be supplied by both Samsung and LG Display. LG Display is already supplying Apple with some of its 6.5" 2688x1242 OLEDs used in the iPhone 11 Pro Max.
Samsung starts constructing its A5 flexible OLED fab
In 2017 Samsung Display started to build its largest OLED production fab, the A5 fab in Asan. The fab was supposed to have a monthly capacity of 180,000 to 270,000 monthly substrates (Samsung's A3 line has a monthly capacity of 135,000 substrates).
Following lower demand for OLED panels and increased competition from China, Samsung stopped constructing the A5 fab, but a new report from Korea now suggests that Samsung is now starting to construct the A5 fab as demand for OLED displays is picking up.
Samsung reportedly placed orders for 30 tower cranes (some of which are already on site) - which will be used to construct 3 or 4 buildings. According to the report Samsung aims to complete building the new buildings by the end of 2020. Of course installing the equipment and ramping up production will take longer. The A3 plant equipment, for example, was only installed 2 years after the buildings were completed.
Sharp has developed a 30-inch 4K rollable OLED panel
Sharp announced that it has developed, in collaboration with NHK, a 30" rollable 4K OLED panel on an IGZO backplane. This is a direct emission OLED, which sharp says is the world's largest ever produced (LG's OLEDs all use color filters).
Sharp's OLED panel is deposited on a thin-film substrate, and has a thickness of 0.5 mm. The display uses NHK's signal processing and panel driving technologies to "improve the brightness uniformity and video clarity".
Sharp started commercial production of smartphone OLED displays in low volume in August 2018, but recent reports suggested that as Sharp understands it cannot compete with Korean and Chinese companies with both technology and price it has decided to stop production. It could be that now Sharp is aiming to divert its efforts to medium or large sized OLED panels.
