DSCC sees fast growth ahead for OLED displays in the notebook market, while miniLED LCDs will stagnate

DSCC says that in 2022, MiniLEDs will hold a 49% share in the advanced notebook market, while OLED will hold a 515% share. Looking into the future,MiniLEDs sales will increase slightly, while OLED sales will rise much faster, and by 2026 OLED shipments to the notebook market will reach over 40 million panels, and hold a 75% market share.

Looking at specific vendors, DSCC sees Asus as the leading OLED notebook maker, with a market share of 55%, followed by Lenovo at 17% and both Samsung and HP at 11%. The market ranking will remain pretty constant in 2022 as a whole.

Samsung Display acquires Cynora for $300 million

According to reports, Samsung Display acquired OLED material developer Cynora, for about $300 million. Samsung acquires just the IP and technology, and Cynora terminated its entire workforce a couple of weeks ago. Samsung is already an investor in Cynora, and so is LGD.

Cynora has been low on cash (its last financing round was in 2019), according to reports, and did not manage to find new investors, and so the company opted to be sold to Samsung. The reported sum seems to be rather high for an emergency exit, and hopefully we'll learn more soon regarding this deal, as not all is clear.

Supply constraints slow down LG Display's OLED expansion plans

According to reports from Korea, supply chain issues are slowing down LG Display's OLED production expansion plans, and key components cannot be secured.

According to the report, the delivery times of some components have more than doubled, and Korean equipment makers cannot produce and supply the production systems that LGD requires. Only 9% of components used in equipment makers in Korea are produced in Korea.

DSCC sees 2.4 million OLED monitor panels shipping in 2026, up from 600,000 in 2022

DSCC says that it expects the advanced monitor category to grow 328% in 2022, to reach 3.6 million panels. OLED monitor shipments will jump 641%, to reach 600,000 units. The growth in OLED shipments will continue, but even in 2026, OLEDs will still take a small part of the market segmented, which is dominated by mini-LED LCDs.

In 2022, DSCC sees QD-OLED panels to grab a 27% market share, while WOLEDs have a lead with a 52% market share. In total, OLEDs will have a 15% market share of the advanced monitor market.

New OLED gadget: Xiaomi 12S / 12S Pro / 12S Ultra

Xiaomi's 12S smartphone features a 6.28-inch 120Hz HDR10+ 1080x2400 AMOLED display, a Qualcomm SM8450 Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, 8/12 GB of RAM, 128/256/512 GB of storage and a triple camera setup with Leica lens.

The 12S Pro offers enhanced specifications, including a 6.73-inch, 1,500 nits 120Hz 1440x3200 LTPO AMOLED and a better camera setup. The 12S Ultra offers a similar display with an ehnahced quad-camera setup with a 1-inch sensor.

The 12S smartphone family will start shipping in early July 2022, starting at around $600.

New OLED gadget: Xiaomi Book Pro 2022

Xiaomi's Book Pro 2022 laptop range comes with two variants, the Book Pro 14 and the Book Pro 16. The Book Pro 14 offers a 14-inch 2880x1880 90Hz AMOLED display (no LCD option on either laptops) and Intel's latest hybrid Alter Lake P chipsets (Core i5 or Core i7).

The Book Pro 16 offers similar specifications, but with a larger 16-inch 3840x2400 60Hz AMOLED display.

Xiaoi's Book Pro 2022 laptops are now available for pre-orders, starting at around $900 in China.
