Researchers show that stretching can change the electronic properties of graphene

A research team led by the University of Basel has found that the electronic properties of graphene can be specifically modified by stretching the material evenly.

The researchers, led by Professor Christian Schönenberger at the Swiss Nanoscience Institute and the Department of Physics at the University of Basel, have studied how the material’s electronic properties can be manipulated by mechanical stretching. In order to do this, they developed a kind of rack by which they stretch the atomically thin graphene layer in a controlled manner, while measuring its electronic properties.

KAUST team develops graphene-based method to make improved lithium-sulfur batteries

KAUST researchers have a layer of hierarchically three-dimensional porous graphene can greatly suppress polysulfide shuttling - a problem known to be holding back the development of lithium-sulfur batteries. This could potentially help create high-density batteries that are useful for various applications, like electric vehicles and more.

Li-S batteries have several potential advantages over the most commonly used types of batteries. They have a higher theoretical energy storage capacity and sulfur is a nontoxic element readily available in nature. Sulfur is also a waste product of the petrochemical industry, so it could be obtained relatively cheaply while increasing the sustainability of another industry.

Researchers develop a new method for quick and efficient synthesis of nanographenes

A research team at Nagoya University in Japan has developed a new technique for synthesizing nanographenes, remarkable materials with a vast number of potential structures that can even exhibit electric and magnetic characteristics beyond those of graphene.

Since each nanographene exhibits different physical characteristics, the key to applied nanographene study is to determine the relationship between the structure and characteristics of as many nanographenes as possible.

Carnarvon and Frontier Impact join forces to produce biodiesel and graphene from biomass

Australia-based oil and gas company Carnarvon Petroleum has created a new joint-venture with Frontier Impact Group to produce renewable materials, including graphene. Carnavron committed $2.6 million AUD into the new JV.

FIG is developing a bio-refinery which will produce materials from biomass and other biogenic feedstocks. The main material produced by the new bio-refinery is biodiesel which is a direct substitute for the petroleum-derived diesel. The high-grade biochar used in the process will be further refined into graphene.
